In simplified terms, the gasification process converts carbon-containing materials into a synthetic gas (SG). The diagram below shows the main stages of gasification.
Gasification Stage Descriptions
Fuel Options: Solid hydrocarbons utilized in gasification may include coal, petroleum coke (petcoke), or renewables that often include materials that would otherwise be disposed of as waste.
Gasification Technology: In gasification a feedstock of a solid or liquid hydrocarbon reacts in the gasifier with steam and oxygen at high temperature and high pressure in a reducing atmosphere to create synthetic gas (SG). The composition of SG is about 85% by volume of carbon monoxide and hydrogen and smaller quantities of carbon dioxide and methane.
Product Options: The synthetic gas can be processed into a variety of clean energy products:
Electric power (in the combined cycle gas and steam turbine formation),
Synthetic natural gas (SNG), a gas with identical properties as natural gas,
Transportation fuels, such as high purity diesel, jet fuel or methanol
